Sparta essays Sparta was a well known city-state in the low hills of the west bank of the Eurotas River. The Spartan terriotory was made up of the provinces of Laconia and Messenia. In 800bc, Sparta was a monarchy with a limited oligarchy. However, in 725bc, the Spartans were in need of land for their vast growth of people. So, they marched over to the Taygetos mountains and joined all their territory with the Messinians by conquering al their land. The Messenians did not appreciate their loss of independence, so they revolted against the Spartans. Almost in a defeat, the Spartans invented a new political system: they turned their city-state into what amounts to a military state. This in turn made the Spartans known for their brutality, armed camps. Not being able to be destroyed for 300 centuries. The Spartan society was divided into 3 main classes. At the top, the Spartiate, served in the army and was the only class of people who enjoyed the full political and legal rights of the state. The middle class consisted of the perioeci. Theses were foreigners in which did all the trade and commerce of the city-state. Because their jobs were so vital, they were allowed a great amount of freedom. The lowest class consisted of the helots. Near like slaves, who sis all the farm work for their Spartan masters under forced labor. It was up to the council to decide when each child was born whether it would was healthy or not. If decided unhealthy, the babies were left on a hill to die. The healthy boy, was left to live. By the age of seven the child was to be put into military training. By the age of twenty they were to joined the armed forces. At the age of thirty they were to be married. And finally at the age of sixty the men were allowed to retire. The females took up gymanastics and wrestling. They were allowed to own land under their names, to shop to have opinions in the state, but they were not allowe do tbe apart of the council. ...

Epicenter vs. Center Epicenter vs. Center Epicenter vs. Center By Simon Kewin In an article on the BBC website just recently, the head of a computer game industry body described the city of Dundee as the epicentre for the industry in Scotland. A little earlier, in an article about renewable energy on the same site, the First Minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond, described the city of Glasgow as the epicentre for renewable energy engineering. Now, either someone has been secretly building a network of vast tunnels underneath Scottish cities, or these are two examples of a widely misused and misunderstood word. Epicenter (epicentre in British English) refers to a point over or above the centre of something. It is most commonly used to identify the point on the Earths surface that lies directly above the focus of an earthquake. Increasingly, however, the term is used in a vague and lazy way to make the word center seem more dramatic and interesting. Reporters are forever standing at the epicenter of something, apparently unaware that the events they describe must, logically, be happening underground. Of course, you could argue that epicenter is a word whose meaning is in transition; that it is acquiring a secondary sense of, simply, center (especially the center of something dramatic or calamitous.) Agamemnon agreed to return her on condition that he got the other girl, Briseis, who had been awarded to Achilles. Its easy to see the argument that takes place after that as childish pouting on the part of Achilles, but this conflict tells us perhaps more about this society than the epic battle between Hector and Achilles. In the conflict between Achilles and Agamemnon, it is possible to see the social structure of the Greek army as a collection of allies rather than an encampment of a single, unified, cohesive army. Its also clear that the insult to Achilles is not only the lack of respect toward him as also being a leader of men in the taking away of a prize, but also in the over-generosity of Agamem nons later peace offerings which would subjugate Achilles as a servant of sorts to Agamemnon. Through his behavior, Achilles allows us to understand important subtleties of Greek social life and gain insight into important concepts in our own social structure. The ancient Greeks were organized according to a very specific social structure that had many subtleties not necessarily recognized today. Rather than being written as a specific code, these subtleties were contained in various expected forms of behavior and informal codes of conflict. For example, it is often forgotten among Achilles critics that the Greek army was not the single entity we think of today when we think of the American forces. Conflict, Decision Making, and Organizational Design - Research Paper Example One way is to engage negotiation strategies. Negotiation can be observed everywhere in strong and subtle ways – in the market, haggling for the best prices, commissioning a young, talented artist for a new project; or closing a huge deal with a known company. There is more to negotiation than mere compromise. Negotiation is an interaction that occurs when 2 or more parties attempt to agree on a mutually acceptable outcome in a situation where their preferences for outcomes are negatively related. Two opposing positions come to a compromise. Lax and Sebenius (1986) add that in negotiation, a better outcome through joint action is achieved rather than when each party would act independently. The element of conflict also arises due to varying preferences and priorities of the different parties. Negotiation becomes a way to resolve such conflicts and compromise on a joint decision, usually, the middle ground stand. McGrath (1984) claims that negotiation is a mixed-motive process - the negotiating parties cooperate to reach an agreement and at the same time, compete to fulfill their own interests. From these definitions of negotiation, it is apparent that negotiators should possess several skills in order to be successful in getting what they bargain for. At the same time, negotiation entails multiple processes that occur simultaneously within each negotiating party such as decision making, research, critical judgment and effective communication, among others. Negotiating strategies involve bringing opposing parties together face to face wherein each individual or group brainstorm on their decisions for the negotiation. When each of the negotiating party becomes aware of the other’s proposed stand or idea, it then becomes the time for bargaining. In the case of business negotiations, this is the space between their reservation prices for the product or service offered and the assumed reservation price of the other party. They come up with their own BAT NA or their â€Å"best alternative to a negotiated agreement†, a strategy proposed by Fisher & Ury (1981). Thompson and Leonardelli (2004) explain that when the first cards set out the table during negotiations fail, then BATNA becomes a fall back alternative of negotiators. BATNA considers all options available for both parties including the reservation price, market information and aspiration levels of each negotiating party. Knowing the other party’s alternatives will help facilitate one’s decision-making process if these are compared with one’s own alternatives (Buelens & Van Poucke, 2004). 2. Determine how evidence-based management could be applied to the work environment you researched. Reay, Berta & Kohn (2009) defined evidence-based management as being â€Å"about making decisions through the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of four sources of information: practitioner expertise and judgment, evidence from the local context, a critical evaluation of the best available research evidence, and the perspectives of those people who might be affected by the decision† (as mentioned in Briner, Denyer, and Rousseau, 2009, p. 19) Applied in the work environment of health care and health insurance this definition would translate to upholding high standards of care. You do this by turning out all the lights so it is completely dark in the room. Then you carefully smash the end of the film canister to release the actual film. Taking a spool from the counter, you gently thread the base of the spool with the end of your roll of film. Squeezing the film to give it a convex shape, you rotate the spool till all the film is on metal. That's the end of the first step.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Second, you go get a liquid canister and place your roll in it closing the lid tightly. This must all be done without turning on the lights. If any light is released by anything in the room your film will be blurred. The main part of the next step is the first actual step of processing. Without removing the top of the can, fill the can with D-76, your processing chemical. The timer will be set for the correct length of time depending on the temperature of the room. Agitate for the first thirty seconds and then five seconds for every thirty seconds until the set time is up. Pour the D-76 into the sink. Fill the canister with it and repeat the agitation method in step number two for four minutes. Fixer is a chemical which coats film to give it a resistance to light. Without this there would be no point in steps one and two. After each agitation slam the canister on the counter to remove all bubbles from the film. Bubbles will cause your film to be splotchy. This would be bad. After your four minutes, pour fixer back into the container it came from.

The American Psychological Association has a set of rules, a Code of Conduct that describes the ethics that should be followed during an experiment. Although in the past these rules weren’t as strict as they are today which lead to the doing of some experiments. During these times there were many experiments but three have become quite popular throughout history.
